What is Strep Throat?
Strep throat is a bacterial infection of the throat and tonsils. Younger children are more likely to get strep throat if they have an older sibling or parent/caregiver with strep throat. Your child may show signs of strep throat from one to three days after being exposed.
Signs of strep include a sore throat, fever, headache, nausea or vomiting, and swollen glands in the neck. Since many viruses can cause the same symptoms as strep, at Emed Primary Care &Walk in Clinic will need to perform a test for strep. Emed has instant lab work that can help with the diagnosis of strep throat and sells the medication through the in-house formulary so you can start getting well immediately. Strep requires antibiotic treatment and it is especially important to take all of the medicine or the infection may come back. If not treated, strep throat can also lead to rheumatic fever, or a number of other health problems. Treatment does not prevent the common cause of kidney disease caused by strep infection.
What are the symptoms of strep throat?
The most common symptoms are:
- Fever (usually higher than 101 degrees F).
- Sore throat.
- Abdominal pain.
- Swollen glands in the neck.
- Decreased appetite.
- Not wanting to swallow or drooling.
- Decreased energy or fatigue.
